PLW/PCL and Pro Circuit Roster Relationship
The PLW Pro Circuit operates alongside the two divisions of PLW’s weeknight league system:
- Premier League WIFFLE® (PLW)
- Premier Challengers League (PCL)
PLW consists of 10 teams. The number of PCL teams may change as the league grows.
Each PLW and PCL organization has a corresponding Pro Circuit team. Connecting the league and Pro Circuit rosters preserves recognizable team identities, encourages league organizations to participate in the tournament circuit, and prevents players from multiple league teams from combining into a small number of independent all-star tournament teams.
The goal is for visiting Pro Circuit teams to compete against the same PLW and PCL organizations and players featured throughout the weeknight season.
Affiliated Players
An Affiliated Player is any player currently rostered by a PLW or PCL organization.
Every Affiliated Player is automatically protected by that organization for Pro Circuit purposes, subject to any previously established Pro Circuit commitment described below.
An Affiliated Player may not:
- Permanently represent an unrelated Pro Circuit team
- Join or create an independent Pro Circuit team
- Be permanently added to another organization’s Pro Circuit roster
- Avoid this restriction by delaying their first Pro Circuit appearance
- Combine with players from other PLW or PCL organizations to create an independent all-star team
A player does not need to appear in a Pro Circuit event to become protected by a PLW or PCL organization. Affiliation begins when the player is officially drafted, traded, claimed, or otherwise added to the organization’s league roster.
Affiliated Organizations
Every PLW and PCL organization retains Pro Circuit rights to its Affiliated Players whether or not the organization participates in every Pro Circuit event.
An organization’s absence from an OPEN event does not release its players or allow them to permanently join another Pro Circuit team.
Affiliated organizations retain their team identity, branding, Pro Points, roster rights, and Pro Circuit position throughout the calendar year.
Unaffiliated Independent Pro Circuit Teams and Players
A Pro Circuit team that is not connected to a PLW or PCL organization is considered an Independent Pro Circuit team.
Players who are not on a PLW or PCL roster are governed by the standard Pro Circuit roster rules.
An unaffiliated player remains eligible to join any Pro Circuit team until appearing in an official Pro Circuit game. Being recruited, listed, announced, or considered by one or more teams does not create a permanent roster lock.
Once an unaffiliated player appears in an official Pro Circuit game, that player becomes locked to that team for the remainder of the calendar year unless officially dropped under the Pro Circuit roster rules.
League Seasons and Transactions
PLW and PCL conduct two league seasons during each calendar year. A tryout and draft are held before each season.
Each league season has its own roster lock and trade deadline. The trade deadline for each league season is Friday at midnight following the completion of Week 13.
Official league transactions may include:
- Draft selections
- League-approved trades
- Waiver claims
- Official releases
- Promotions or assignments between PLW and PCL
- Other transactions approved by PLW
Pro Circuit-only trades involving Affiliated Players are not permitted. An Affiliated Player may change permanent Pro Circuit organizations only through a legitimate PLW or PCL roster transaction.
Temporary, conditional, sham, or prearranged league transactions intended primarily to manipulate Pro Circuit rosters, Invitational eligibility, or competitive balance are prohibited.
PLW may reject, delay, or reverse any transaction determined to be an attempt to circumvent the connected-roster system.
Trades Between Affiliated Organizations
When an Affiliated Player is officially traded from one PLW or PCL organization to another, the player’s Pro Circuit affiliation also transfers to the acquiring organization.
After the trade becomes official:
- The player may no longer represent the former organization in future Pro Circuit events
- The player becomes eligible to represent the acquiring organization
- The player’s individual season statistics remain with the player
- Pro Points already earned remain with the team that earned them
- Previous tournament results are not changed or recalculated
A legitimate trade between Affiliated organizations is not considered a standard Pro Circuit drop and does not carry the 100-point dropping penalty.
League Releases
When an Affiliated Player is officially released from a PLW or PCL organization, the player also loses permanent Pro Circuit affiliation with that organization.
If the player previously appeared in a Pro Circuit event for that organization during the current calendar year, the release is treated as a Pro Circuit drop and the standard 100-point penalty applies.
If the player never appeared in an official Pro Circuit game for that organization, no Pro Circuit dropping penalty applies.
After being released, the player is governed by the standard dropped-player and Pro Circuit eligibility rules.
A released player may not be immediately returned to the same organization through a temporary or prearranged transaction intended to avoid roster restrictions.
First League Draft of the Year
Pro Circuit roster locks reset at the end of each calendar year.
Players selected in the first PLW/PCL draft of the new year become Affiliated Players of their drafting organizations before the new Pro Circuit season begins.
Because the previous year’s Pro Circuit locks have expired, those drafted players are eligible to represent their new Affiliated organizations in Pro Circuit competition.
Once drafted, they may not choose to return permanently to an unaffiliated Pro Circuit team from the previous calendar year.
Midyear League Draft
A second PLW/PCL tryout and draft are held during the break between the first and second league seasons.
Players selected in the midyear draft immediately become Affiliated Players of their drafting organization for weeknight league competition.
However, becoming an Affiliated Player does not cancel or override a Pro Circuit roster lock that the player previously established with an unaffiliated Pro Circuit team during that calendar year.
If a player is drafted after already appearing for an unaffiliated Pro Circuit team:
- The player may immediately play for the drafting organization in PLW or PCL league games
- The player must continue representing the previously established Pro Circuit team through December 31
- The player may not permanently represent the new Affiliated organization in Pro Circuit events during that period
- The player becomes Pro Circuit eligible for the Affiliated organization beginning January 1
This protects the player’s original Pro Circuit team from losing an important player in the middle of the tournament season.
Existing Pro Circuit Commitments
A player’s previously established Pro Circuit lock remains effective through December 31 even if the player later becomes an Affiliated Player.
The player’s new league affiliation does not:
- Cancel the existing Pro Circuit lock
- Transfer the player out of the original Pro Circuit team
- Allow the player to choose between the two teams
- Make the player eligible for Invitationals with the new Affiliated organization
- Remove the player from the original team’s Invitational roster
If the original Pro Circuit team subsequently drops the player, the player still may not permanently represent the newly Affiliated organization until January 1.
Until January 1, the dropped player may participate only as permitted under the standard guest-player and dropped-player rules.
This prevents teams from arranging a release to bypass the calendar-year transition rule.
January 1 Transfer
On January 1, all previous Pro Circuit roster locks expire.
A player who joined a PLW or PCL organization during the previous year automatically becomes Pro Circuit eligible for that Affiliated organization.
Beginning January 1:
- The player may permanently represent the Affiliated organization
- The player may no longer permanently represent the former unaffiliated team
- The player counts toward the Affiliated organization’s Pro Circuit roster maximum
- The former unaffiliated team must fill the vacated roster position with another eligible player
No release penalty or Pro Points charge applies to the automatic January 1 transfer.
Midyear Roster Shortages
An Affiliated organization is responsible for considering how its league transactions will affect its available Pro Circuit roster.
A team that releases existing players and uses its midyear draft selections on players already locked to unaffiliated Pro Circuit teams may have fewer Pro Circuit-eligible players than league-rostered players for the remainder of that calendar year.
For example, an organization may have:
- Seven players eligible for both league and Pro Circuit play
- Five newly drafted players eligible for league play but still locked to unaffiliated Pro Circuit teams
The organization would have a complete 12-player league roster but only seven permanent players eligible to represent it in Pro Circuit competition for the remainder of that year.
This does not create an exception to existing Pro Circuit locks. The shortage is a consequence of the organization’s roster decisions.
The organization may address the shortage through:
- Eligible guest players in OPEN events
- Official trades with other Affiliated organizations
- Other roster moves permitted under PLW/PCL and Pro Circuit rules
Incoming Protected Players
A midyear draft pick who remains locked to another Pro Circuit team is considered an incoming protected player.
An incoming protected player does not count as an active Pro Circuit player for the acquiring organization until January 1 because that player is not yet eligible to represent the organization.
However, the player reserves a future roster position with the organization.
An organization may not temporarily fill every unavailable position with permanent Pro Circuit-only players and then exceed the roster maximum when its incoming protected players become eligible on January 1.
The organization is responsible for ensuring that all incoming protected players can be added without exceeding the 12-player maximum.
If an organization would exceed 12 eligible players on January 1, it must complete the necessary releases or other permitted roster moves before entering its first Pro Circuit event of the new year.
Guest Appearances by Incoming Players
An incoming protected player may appear as a guest for the player’s new Affiliated organization during a regular OPEN event only when the player’s permanent Pro Circuit team is not participating.
The appearance remains a guest appearance and does not transfer the player’s permanent Pro Circuit rights.
The standard guest-player rules apply:
- The player counts as one of the team’s permitted guest players
- The team receives the applicable 15% Pro Points penalty
- The player’s statistics count toward yearly individual totals
- The player remains permanently locked to the original Pro Circuit team through December 31
If the player’s permanent Pro Circuit team is entered in the event, the player must represent that team or sit out.
OPEN Event Guests
An Affiliated Player whose permanent organization is not participating in an OPEN event may play as a guest under the standard Pro Circuit guest-player rules.
A guest appearance does not permanently transfer the player’s affiliation or roster rights.
If the player’s permanent organization is participating in the same event, the player may not guest for another team.
Teams may use a maximum of two guest players in an OPEN event. Each guest carries a 15% reduction in the team’s final event Pro Points.
Guest-player statistics remain official and count toward the player’s yearly statistical totals and individual award qualification.
Invitational Eligibility
Guest players are prohibited in all Invitationals, including the PLW Main Event.
An Affiliated organization may use only players who are permanently Pro Circuit eligible for that organization at the time of the Invitational.
An incoming protected player who remains locked to another Pro Circuit team is not eligible to represent the new Affiliated organization in an Invitational before January 1.
The player remains eligible to represent the original Pro Circuit team if that team qualifies for the Invitational.
An organization must have at least six permanently eligible players available to participate in an Invitational. If the organization cannot field six eligible players, it must decline the invitation.
The invitation will then pass to the next eligible team on the Pro Points leaderboard.
Roster Maximum
Each organization may have no more than 12 permanent Pro Circuit roster positions.
Affiliated Players who are currently eligible to represent the organization count as active Pro Circuit players.
Incoming protected players reserve future roster positions even though they do not become active Pro Circuit players for the organization until January 1.
Guest players do not occupy permanent roster positions. However, a team may dress no more than 12 total players for an individual event, including permanent players and guests.
Player Availability
Participation in PLW or PCL league play does not require a player to participate in Saturday Pro Circuit events.
Each organization is responsible for building a roster capable of meeting its weeknight and Saturday commitments.
A player’s inability or unwillingness to play on Saturdays does not allow the organization to permanently recruit a player protected by another PLW or PCL team.
For regular OPEN events, a team experiencing availability problems may use up to two eligible guest players under the standard guest-player rules.
No availability exception permits guest players in Invitationals.
Team Pro Points and Player Statistics
Pro Points belong to the team that earned them.
Pro Points do not follow individual players through drafts, trades, releases, waiver claims, or January 1 affiliation changes. Previous event results and Pro Points are not recalculated when a player changes organizations.
Individual statistics follow the player.
Statistics earned in OPEN events as a permanent player or guest remain part of the player’s yearly totals, regardless of any later league or Pro Circuit affiliation change.
Roster Circumvention
Teams and players may not use league transactions, releases, guest appearances, temporary roster moves, or private agreements to circumvent these rules.
Prohibited actions include:
- Creating an independent all-star team from Affiliated Players
- Temporarily trading players for a specific Pro Circuit event
- Arranging a release solely to bypass an existing Pro Circuit lock
- Hiding or misrepresenting a player’s affiliation
- Using another team or owner to hold roster rights on behalf of a different organization
- Reversing a transaction after an important Pro Circuit event under a prior arrangement
PLW may reject, reverse, or penalize any transaction or roster arrangement that violates the intent of the connected-roster system.
Final Authority
PLW retains final authority over all matters involving:
- Affiliated Player status
- PLW and PCL roster transactions
- Pro Circuit eligibility
- Conflicting roster rights
- Drafted players with previous Pro Circuit commitments
- Trades and releases
- Incoming protected players
- Guest appearances
- Invitational eligibility
- Attempts to circumvent the connected-roster system
PLW’s decision regarding a player’s eligible Pro Circuit organization is final.
